Why is californium so expensive?

The first thing to understand is that no-one buys californium by the gram. They buy it by the microgram. So it isn’t really $27 million dollars per gram, it is $27 per microgram. … Since a gram qualifies as a large amount when talking about elements, I believe that is the reason why it is so expensive.
